Illness to Health Victories
Results: The Only Thing that Matters in the World of Hurt Kids

Hurt children often have a very rough start in life. It can be difficult to escape a downward spiral of chronic illness.
Brain-injured children are often sick. Some brain-injured children have more days of illness in a year than days of wellness.
Upper respiratory illnesses, asthma, stomach problems, gut problems, skin problems, seizures and allergies are common in the world of brain-injured children. It is very difficult for a well child to develop properly in the face of illness. It is much more difficult for the hurt child. Often the hurt child will lose gains he has made, and it will take many months to get those abilities back again. Some illnesses may become life-threatening and require hospitalization and medications with the negative side-effects that go with them. This can create a cycle of illness more medication, weakened immune system and illness again. When a hurt child ends up hospitalized this can be terrifying for the parents of a hurt child. The stress is enormous.
Once a child begins a full neurological program, we expect to see a dramatic improvement in the child’s health.
For this reason, the top priority for every child is to be healthy. This is job one. No child can do a good physical or intellectual program unless he is healthy enough to do so.
The Health Victory is a goal for every child on our program. To achieve this victory a child must be 100% healthy for 12 months or more. It should be noted that the average well child in the United States is ill eight to twelve times a year! The following children have achieved health victories.
Zachary

Zachary was born a healthy baby, however, during surgery for hernia repair in his first month he had cardiac arrest. Following a vaccination at 13 months of age, he lost the speech he had developed. At 22 months of age, he was hospitalized for anaphylactic shock after eating a peanut. Zachary had frequent severe upper respiratory infections during childhood, including hospitalizations with steroid treatment. He was diagnosed as speech delayed at three years of age and began speech therapy. At eight years of age, Zachary was below his age level overall, especially in speech development and social skills, and had frequent temper tantrums. Zachary’s parents attended the What to Do About Your Brain-Injured Child course when Zachary was nine years old, and he had his first appointment at The Institutes.

With special attention to his nutrition, including an anti-inflammatory diet, Zachary has now had perfect health for 17 months. He is reading and math skills are well above age level, his writing, typing, and his speech are improving every day. He is highly responsible in accomplishing his home treatment program every day which is a big part of why he is progressing so well.
Hana

Hana was born prematurely at 29 week of gestation, she had experienced a cranial fracture, and within a month, she was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and periventricular leukomalacia. In early childhood, she began having seizures and was placed on anti-convulsant medication. Hana had frequent respiratory infections. She was immobile with limited hand function. Hana’s parents attended the What to Do About Your Brain-Injured Child course when she was five years old. Hana had her first visit to The Institutes a year later. Hana had progressed overall on her home treatment program, she was crawling for the first time, and reading.

By seven years of age, Hana no longer had seizures and all anti-convulsant medication was discontinued. She was successfully writing. Today, Hana is 12 years old, she is a top student at her age level and above. She has been 100% healthy for more than two years. One of the secrets of her excellent health is her family’s garden of fresh vegetables and herbs and the great variety in her daily balanced diet.
Sebastian

Sebastian was a well child, at six years of age he was learning to read in school and was very active physically doing flips and acrobatics. He began having severe nerve pain and was diagnosed with Guillan-Barre Syndrome. During treatment, he had an adverse reaction to the medication, creating hydrocephalus and traumatic injury to the brain. He lost a great many of his functions. Sebastian could no longer stand, creep, walk or talk. Sebastian breathed shallowly, often holding his breath, and had difficulty maintaining his body temperature. When Sebastian was ten years old, his parents attended the What to Do About Your Brain-Injured Child course, and he had his first appointment a year later. At that time, Sebastian was able to read but slowly and significantly below his age level. Physically, he was functionally immobile.

Today, at fifteen years of age, he is robust. He has not had a single illness in more than four years. He has a great appetite and a healthy diet which includes a wide variety of home-grown vegetables. Sebastian loves reading, math, science, and has just written his first book. He has excellent speech. He works hard every day toward being able to walk.
Great health is more than the absence of illness it is having great energy, enthusiasm, and creativity, a hearty appetite, good sleep every night and most of all a sense of humor!
Our children deserve to have great health and their parents work hard to make sure they are healthy every day so they can complete their programs and get well.
These children have a much better chance of making their goals and achieving what they want in life because they are 100% healthy.
